Xohana Torres Award

Xohana Torres, poet, novelist, playwright was born in Santiago de Compostela in 1931. After spending her life committed to culture and the social role of women and after a brilliant literary career, she became a member of the Royal Galician Academy in 2001.

In 1992, the Department of Women of the local government of Santiago and the University of Santiago de Compostela created an annual award for research and essays – in the humanistic, social, scientific area – which was named after the famous writer and academic, to contribute to the knowledge of women who individually or collectively, in the past or nowadays, stand out in an sector in Galicia and who provide their experience to the society as a whole. The award was interrupted in 2012 and retaken in 2016.
